The Egyptianizing gateway - called a pylon - of the Grove Street Cemetery was completed in1847. For Henry Austin, the architect of this gateway, the pylon linked the newly constructed cemetery to an ancient past, and a culture that had succeeded in achieving a type of physically tangible immortality for its dead.
